Once on the edge of the Western frontier, New Mexico now offers big-city accommodations while still holding tight to its unique mix of cultures and heritage.

Both Albuquerque and Santa Fe are emerging as top business and tourist destinations, as they are complete with abundant hotel and conference space and many historical and cultural attractions. Whether you travel to New Mexico on business or pleasure, you'll love the amazing scenery -- the state has Rocky Mountain ranges in the north, desert in the south, portions of the Great Plains to the east, spectacular canyons to the west and the Rio Grande, which runs right through the center of the state.

Make sure to sample the tasty, usually spicy cuisine while visiting New Mexico. Although it's mistakenly referred to as "Mexican food" or "Tex-Mex," the Southwestern dishes are actually the result of the blending of Indian and Hispanic cultures. Enjoy...and watch out for those extra-spicy chile peppers!

Historical Note: When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, they found permanent mud-brick settlements all along the Rio Grande and near other  state's waterways. They called them "pueblos," after the villages they had left behind, and dedicated each one to a saint, who then became the village patron. For the most part, the Pueblo people accepted their strange, new neighbors. But over the years, resistance to Spanish attempts at religious and cultural oppression simmered until it finally ignited in the Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1680, the only successful revolt ever waged in the Americas against the Spanish presence.
